Acrylic and Mixed Media on stretched canvas, wired for hanging
This painting, Summer Surprise, emerged from a summer day in the studio. I had only a handful of days while my kids were away to paint and I was hoping and praying to finish a few (of the many) mid-stage paintings in that time. While working on a different piece, I grabbed this buried canvas and cleaned the paint on my brush off on it. I had started it the summer prior - adding three dimensional flowing lines in some of my favorite colors - but had put it to the side out of frustration, not knowing what to do next.
Suddenly, a year later, covering up most of the negative space with darker paint allowed me to see a direction. I grabbed some drawing tools and layered lines keeping freedom, curiosity and play at the forefront of my mind, not allowing doubt to creep in. I love the contrasts in this painting - the watercolor-like translucent layers beside bold lines creating flowing shapes mimicking petals. I believe it captures the loose free days of summer. It was certainly a pleasant summer surprise to have this painting unfold, effortlessly.
